This experiment shows how oil, water, and food coloring react when mixed. It helps us understand that oil does not mix with water and how food coloring droplets fall like colorful rain inside the water.
Materials Needed:
- A clear glass or jar
- Water
- Cooking oil
- Food coloring (various colors)
- A spoon
Steps:
- Fill the Glass with WaterPour water into the clear glass or jar until it is about three-quarters full.
- Prepare the Oil and Food Coloring
- Stir the Oil and Colors
- Pour the Oil Mixture into the Water
- Watch the Rainbow Rain Effect
Oil and water do not mix because oil is less dense. The food coloring, which is water-based, does not dissolve in oil. When the mixture is poured into the water, the food coloring droplets pass through the oil and disperse, creating a "rain" effect in different colors.
